Amherst Overcomes Three-Goal Deficit to Stun Capitals in Game 5
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SUMMERSIDE, PEI – In a playoff battle defined by resilience and a relentless comeback effort, the Amherst Ramblers erased a 3-0 first-period deficit to defeat the Summerside Western Capitals 4-3 on Monday night at Credit Union Place. The victory ties the MHL Cup semi-final series at one game apiece as the action shifts back to Amherst.
The opening frame belonged entirely to the home team. Capitalizing on early discipline issues by the Ramblers, Summerside’s power play clicked just 2:46 into the game when Justin Ouellette found the back of the net. The momentum stayed with the Capitals as Cade Moser doubled the lead at 6:33. The hill became even steeper for Amherst late in the period when Matthew MacLean scored Summerside’s second power-play goal of the night at 17:36, sending the Ramblers to the locker room trailing 3-0 and being outshot 17-4.
Amherst emerged for the second period a different team. Just 1:29 into the frame, Jacob Kaine breathed life into the Ramblers’ bench with a power-play marker, assisted by Anthony Gaudet and Owen Aura. The game’s most pivotal moment arrived late in the period. While killing a penalty for cross-checking, the Ramblers’ special teams struck again—this time shorthanded. Mark Corbett stripped the puck and scored unassisted at 18:52, cutting the deficit to 3-2 and completely shifting the energy of the contest.
The Ramblers’ relentless pressure finally broke the Capitals in the third. At 8:27, Ty Peddigrew tied the game 3-3 off a feed from Gaudet, who earned his second primary assist of the night. With the game hanging in the balance and less than four minutes remaining, Cooper Cormier became the hero for Amherst. At 16:18, Cormier took a pass from Gaudet and Christian White to beat Capitals goaltender Kolton Bourret, giving the Ramblers their first lead of the night. Amherst’s defence and goaltender Hudson Bradley slammed the door shut in the final minutes to secure the 4-3 victory.
Hudson Bradley was the backbone of the Amherst victory, making 32 saves on 35 shots, including a perfect 18-for-18 over the final two periods. Summerside’s Kolton Bourret stopped 21 of 25 shots in the loss.
Amherst finished 1-for-8 on the power play but added a crucial shorthanded goal. Summerside went 2-for-5 with the man advantage, with all their production coming in the first period.
The series now moves to the Amherst Stadium for Game 6, where the Ramblers will look to use their home-ice advantage to take the best-of-seven series. Fans are encouraged to arrive early for what promises to be an electric atmosphere.
