Capitals Edge Ramblers in Double-Overtime Thriller to Even Series

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AMHERST, NS – In an exhaustive, back-and-forth battle that required nearly five periods of play, the Amherst Ramblers fell 5-4 to the Summerside Western Capitals in double overtime on Saturday night. The loss at Amherst Stadium evens the MHL Cup semi-final series at 2-2.

Despite erasing multiple deficits and forcing extra time, the Ramblers were unable to find the final breakthrough in a game that saw the two teams combine for over 100 shots on goal.

The Capitals opened the scoring early when Justin Ouellette found the net at 4:31. The Ramblers struggled to find their footing for much of the period but were rescued by a last-second surge. With just four seconds remaining in the frame, Owen Aura blasted home the equalizer, assisted by Mark Corbett and Ryan Hayes, sending the teams into the intermission locked at 1-1.

The middle frame was a roller coaster for the home crowd. Summerside reclaimed the lead with two quick goals from Jordan Shaw (short-handed) and Henry Ouellet to make it 3-1. Refusing to go quiet, Amherst responded with a flurry of their own. Mark Corbett cut the lead to one at 8:32, followed by a Zach Wheeler goal at 12:07 to tie the game at 3-3.

The momentum shifted again late in the period when Summerside’s Elliott Mullen scored at 17:55, giving the Capitals a 4-3 lead heading into the third. Following the second period, Amherst made a change in net, as Hudson Bradley stepped in for Brandon Lavoie to start the third.

Amherst played with desperate urgency in the third, and their persistence paid off at 9:21. Ryan Hayes hammered home a feed from Corbett and Cooper Cormier to tie the game at 4-4.

The first overtime period was a showcase of goaltending excellence, with both Bradley and Summerside’s Kolten Bourret making game-saving stops. The tension finally broke 8:58 into the second overtime period when Ryder Howatt scored the winner for Summerside, ending the marathon contest.
