Lavoie Shuts Out Capitals

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SUMMERSIDE, PE – In a goaltending duel for the ages, the Amherst Ramblers secured a dramatic 1-0 overtime victory against the Summerside Western Capitals on Thursday night at Credit Union Place. With the win, the Ramblers take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven MHL Cup semi-final series.

The story of the night was Amherst goaltender Brandon Lavoie, who turned aside all 37 shots he faced to earn a hard-fought shutout. Across the ice, Summerside’s Kolton Bourret was nearly as impenetrable, stopping 24 of 25 shots in a game that remained scoreless through 60 minutes of regulation.

The first three periods were characterized by high-stakes defensive play and physical intensity. Both teams had opportunities to break the deadlock, but neither side could find a gap in the opposing goaltender’s armor.

Summerside mounted their heaviest pressure in the second period, outshooting Amherst 21-5. However, Lavoie remained composed, notably turning away several high-danger chances during a four-minute double-minor penalty assessed to Amherst’s Ben Manos for high sticking. The Ramblers’ penalty kill was perfect on the night, successfully neutralizing all three of the Capitals’ power play opportunities.

As the game moved into sudden-death overtime, the tension reached a fever pitch in front of a crowd of 1,770 fans. The breakthrough finally came at the 9:33 mark of the extra frame when Summerside’s Simon Robert was assessed a four-minute double-minor for high sticking.

Amherst’s power play, which had been patient all night, capitalized on the man advantage just six seconds later. At 9:39 of overtime, Jacob Kaine struck for his second goal of the post-season, firing home a feed from Owen Aura and Anthony Gaudet to end the game and give Amherst the crucial road win.
