Ramblers Fall Just Short in Hard-Fought Semi-Final Opener Against Capitals
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SUMMERSIDE, PEI – The Amherst Ramblers opened their MHL Cup semi-final series with a gritty performance on the road, but ultimately fell 3-2 to the Summerside Western Capitals in a back-and-forth Game 1 at Credit Union Place on Saturday night.
Despite a spectacular 39-save performance from goaltender Brandon Lavoie, the Ramblers were unable to overcome a heavy offensive push from the Capitals, who outshot Amherst 42-20 over the course of the evening.
Amherst started the game with defensive discipline, weatherng an early Summerside storm. The Ramblers broke the ice late in the first period when Cooper Cormier found the back of the net at 15:21, assisted by Anthony Gaudet, to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. The period was marked by physical play, with both teams trading minor penalties, but Amherst headed into the first intermission with the momentum and the lead.
The second frame belonged to the hosts. Summerside leveled the score just 2:49 into the period on a goal by Lane Sim. Shortly after, a slashing penalty to Amherst’s Christian White proved costly. On the ensuing power play, Summerside’s Elliott Mullen notched his first of the night at 4:54 to give the Capitals a 2-1 advantage. Lavoie was the story of the period, turning aside 21 of the 23 shots he faced to keep the Ramblers within striking distance.
The Ramblers came out firing in the final frame. Just 48 seconds into the period, Ben Manos finished a feed from Gaudet (his second assist of the night) to tie the game at 2-2 and silence the home crowd of 1,301 fans.
However, the deadlock didn’t last long. Less than two minutes later, Elliott Mullen struck again for his second of the game at 2:47 to restore the Summerside lead. Amherst pushed for the equalizer late in the game, including a 9-shot effort in the final period, but Capitals goaltender Kolton Bourret stood tall to secure the 3-2 victory for the home side.
