Bathurst, NB
The Amherst Ramblers showed poise, patience, and resilience on Saturday night, clawing back from an early deficit to earn a hard-fought 3–2 win over the Chaleur Lightning at the KC Irving Regional Centre in Bathurst.
Amherst opened the scoring midway through the first period when Anthony Morin snapped home the game’s first goal at 9:21, finishing off a setup from Jack O’Blenis to put the Ramblers ahead 1–0.
But the Lightning struck back almost immediately. Chaleur’s Clark tied the game at 11:54, and just a few minutes later, MacDonald found the back of the net at 15:53, swinging momentum firmly in the home team’s favour. The Ramblers were forced onto their heels, outshot 11–6 in the opening frame and needed to reset heading into the intermission.
The second period told a different story. Amherst settled in, tightened defensively, and began winning puck battles that had slipped away earlier. The breakthrough came at 8:14, when Thomas Gagnon buried the equalizer, shifting the tone of the game and restoring confidence on the Rambler bench.
From that point on, Amherst dictated much of the play. Though they couldn’t convert on a pair of power-play opportunities, the Ramblers carried the momentum into the third period with the score knotted at 2–2.
The deciding moment arrived early in the final frame. At 7:14, Anthony Gaudet cashed in for Amherst, lifting the Ramblers back in front 3–2 and silencing a lively Bathurst crowd.
Chaleur pushed hard in the final minutes, but goaltender Brandon Lavoie, in his debut for the Ramblers, delivered a composed performance, turning aside 22 of 24 shots and holding the Lightning off the board for the entire third period. Amherst’s defensive group closed the lanes, blocked shots, and refused to allow Chaleur any clean looks as the clock wound down.
After surrendering two goals late in the first, the Ramblers could easily have let the game slip away. Instead, they responded with structure, discipline, and timely scoring. Despite going 0-for-2 on the power play, Amherst held Chaleur scoreless on all six of their opportunities—one of the defining factors in the win.
With the victory, Amherst returns home with confidence and momentum, proving once again that they can battle through adversity and find a way to close out tight games.
