The Amherst Ramblers hit the ice Sunday night like a team with something to prove — and they didn’t take long to make their point. In a dominant 7–3 win over the Valley Wildcats at the Kings Mutual Century Centre, Amherst controlled the pace from the opening whistle, backed by a pair of goals from Zach Wheeler, Darien Reynolds and strong special teams play that made all the difference.

The game’s opening minutes were a slow simmer — until the Ramblers lit the fire.

At 11:23 of the first period, Amherst’s power play went to work after a tripping penalty to Valley’s Amos. It didn’t take long. Captian Mark Corbett stepped into a one-timer and rifled it past Valley goaltender  giving the Ramblers a 1–0 lead. Just 18 seconds later, Zach Wheeler followed up with a sharp-angle snipe that doubled the advantage and silenced the home crowd.

Amherst wasn’t done yet.

On another man advantage less than two minutes later, Bailey Shortall buried a rebound off a point shot from Elliot Wright, making it 3–0 before the Wildcats could find their footing. It was a nearly flawless period for the Ramblers, who outshot Valley and kept them off the board entirely through 20 minutes.

Valley showed signs of life early in the second. A quick strike from Fletcher at 3:31 gave the home team a glimmer of hope — but it didn’t last.

Less than a minute later, Amherst struck again. Darien Reynolds found open ice in front and beat Stoddard cleanly to restore the three-goal lead. Then, at 5:41, Elliot Wright buried the puck off a slick feed from Peddigrew. The score was suddenly 5–1, and Amherst had reasserted total control.

Valley would add another from Arsenault just 18 seconds later, showing they still had some fight. But despite flashes of pressure, they couldn’t break through Amherst’s disciplined defense — or beat goaltender Leblanc, who made key saves throughout the night.

In the third period, the Ramblers made sure there would be no comeback.

Wheeler scored his second of the night just four minutes in, tapping in a loose puck from the crease to make it 6–2. The Wildcats answered once more — Pilotte scoring at 6:39 — but it was too little, too late.

Amherst’s final stamp came at 12:39 when Reynolds scored his second of the night, finishing off a perfect pass from O’Blenis to seal the 7–3 win.

Goaltender Lyam Leblanc stood tall in net, turning aside 36 of 39 shots to earn his first win of the season. At the other end, Stoddard faced an onslaught of 43 shots, stopping 36 in a tough outing for the Valley defense.

Special teams told the story — Amherst went 2-for-3 on the power play and killed off both Valley opportunities. The Ramblers’ penalty kill was aggressive and disciplined, and their offensive depth shined throughout the game.

The Ramblers’ performance was as complete as they come — balanced scoring, solid goaltending, and special teams execution. With the offense firing and momentum building, Amherst looks ready to make some noise this season.
