SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — The Amherst Ramblers came up just short in a defensive battle Saturday night, falling 1-0 to the Summerside Western Capitals at Credit Union Place.

Summerside opened the scoring at 12:06 of the first period, with the lone goal of the contest proving to be the difference. Despite trailing early, the Ramblers remained within striking distance throughout the remainder of the game.

Amherst pushed for the equalizer over the final two periods, generating scoring chances but being unable to solve Summerside goaltender Max Picard. The Western Capitals held the Ramblers off the scoresheet to secure the shutout victory in front of 1,993 fans.

Brandon Lavoie delivered a strong performance between the pipes for Amherst, stopping 32 of 33 shots. Picard was equally impressive at the other end, turning aside all 43 shots he faced to earn the shutout and first star honours.

The Ramblers finished the night 0-for-8 on the power play, while Summerside went 0-for-2 with the man advantage. Lavoie was named Amherst’s star of the game for his outstanding effort.

Despite the narrow loss, Amherst’s goaltending and defensive effort kept the game within reach until the final buzzer.

The Ramblers will have a quick opportunity to respond as they take on the Western Capitals on Monday afternoon. Puck drop is scheduled for 2:00 p.m at the Amhers.
